Rabbi Yitzchok Lobenstein
HaGesher El HaLev · The Bridge to the Heart
"We are dealing with human souls, not a fixed formula… No one needs to travel this road alone."
— from Staying Close
Who he is
Rabbi Yitzchok Lobenstein is a moreh tzedek and lecturer on chinuch, and the founder of HaGesher El HaLev (The Bridge to the Heart). He grew up in England and lives today in Kiryat Sefer (Modiin Illit), Israel.
Since 5760 (2000), with the encouragement of Gedolei Yisrael, he has guided parents of struggling children and teens, and couples going through hard times. He brings Torah wisdom, calm judgment and an open heart to that work.
Torah background
- Studied at Yeshivas Chayei Olam (London) and Yeshivas Sha'arei Torah (Manchester). In 5759 he came to Yeshivas Mir in Jerusalem, and then joined Kollel Mir, learning Shas and then Yoreh De'ah in its chaburos.
- Received semicha from Harav Shlomo Zalman Ulman zt"l, followed by four years of shimush in his Beis Hora'ah.
- Learned parts of Choshen Mishpat in the kollel of Harav Asher Weiss shlit"a, with shimush in his Beis Din.
- Was especially close to Harav Yisrael Eliyahu Weintraub zt"l, and has published much of his Torah. He was also especially close to Harav Moshe Shapira zt"l and attended his weekly shiurim for many years.
- For almost twenty years he has attended the weekly shiur of Harav Yaakov Hillel shlit"a.
- Gave a weekly vaad for about thirteen years to a group of top bochurim from Mir, Brisk, Yagdil and other yeshivos.
- In 5779 (2019) he founded Kollel Chen VaChesed, where the avreichim learn the hidden depths of Torah (Razei Torah), and he gives weekly shiurim there. He also gives a weekly shiur to a group in Lakewood.
His approach
His approach rests on thousands of Torah sources and is simple to put into practice. A few of its principles, from his writings (mainly the booklet Staying Close):
- The soul's oxygen. "There are two feelings without which a person cannot live in a healthy way: 'respect and appreciation' and 'love and friendship.' They are a person's oxygen."
- Unconditional belonging. "The child needs to know: You are ours. You are wanted here. Our relationship with you does not depend on your spiritual state or your functioning." A shared home still needs a few clear boundaries, stated with respect.
- See the child, not just the symptoms. "Is he bad, or is something bad happening to him?" A change in the parents' outlook is often the first and most important step.
- First things first. When safety is at stake, it comes before everything else. Regular chinuch goals can wait.
- Parents need chizuk too. Emunah, bitachon, shalom bayis and the parents' own strength are at the heart of his guidance.
Who he helps
- Parents of struggling children and teens, at every stage.
- Couples under strain, especially when a child's struggle weighs on shalom bayis.
